Your Child: The Growing Wonder

Print

At birth, your child’s brain contains over a million million brain cells.

Your child can grow and learn at an amazing rate, developing physically and mentally each day. The first signs of growth seem to be purely physical. And then you see how he starts interacting to his environment, showing signs of intelligence, memory and recognition. He is learning, and as his brain develops, he learns faster and faster.

Your child is a born musician, thanks to an innate sense of rhythm, immaculate pitch and a voice, ear and brain system that is a perfect mimicking machine.

As your child’s senses develop, he begins to take in more information about the world around him. Sounds, shapes, colours, textures and tastes are all absorbed. And as his brain develops, so does his ability to learn, putting to use the information provided by his senses. He can recognize you, by your face, by your smell and by the sound of your voice.

At 18 months, your child’s vocabulary explodes, adding new words at the astonishing rate of 12 every day.

With the addition of words, your child’s pace of learning increases dramatically, as language now helps him understand concepts beyond what his senses can provide. His body becomes stronger, and as he learns to use it, his level of intelligence increases by leaps and bounds, setting the foundation for even greater learning to come.

It is at this time where keeping him healthy is critical to his proper development. Good health promotes growth, with every day bringing him closer to his fullest potential. Illness and allergies must be avoided, as these drain much-needed energy for growing.

When your child is sick, development may be stopped momentarily.

Support your child at this important time! As a parent you can encourage his development by providing the necessary tools for growth and learning. Talk to him, interact with him and begin to teach him about the world around him.
